Hello Colbert Nation!
Reach the Beach is quickly approaching! We have now a full team. Many of us are veterans (myself, Mary, Ross, Becky, Tracy, and Dave). We also have a few newbies that I’d like to welcome: Jill S., Jill B., Abby, Jacqui, Chris, and Joel. Jill S., Jacqui, and Chris were part of our Green Mountain Relay team and we are happy to have them join us at RTB this year.
Ross has graciously agreed to be the co-captain so that Mary can take a back seat and enjoy the ride this time around. He will be responsible for getting Van 2 on time to the transition areas and help with other logistics. He is a RTB veteran and also captained our GMR team back in June.
For those that have done RTB before, they are some major changes to route. Mainly, we will not be running on the Kancamagus. Instead, we will head north from Cannon Mountain through Route 3 and 302 and then head down through Crawford Notch. This significantly changes the first set of legs but also evens out the mileage a little more between the two vans.
There’s a long list of items below so please take the time and read through them carefully.
Registration: Each runner needs to register on the website. Go to https://www.rtbrelay.com/reg_runner.php select the team “The Colbert Nation” from the drop down list. This needs to be done ASAP. We will get a notification of our start time around September 5th.
Handbook: Please take a few minutes to review the handbook especially those of you that are new to the race. We will have a copy for each van at the race. Please note there are severe penalties this year for breaking the rules so make sure you review them on pages 36-39.
Vans: I have rented two 15 passenger vans from Merchant’s Auto in Hooksett. The cost per person will be $75. We will also split the costs of gas amongst the 12 of us.
Drivers: We are looking for a driver for each van. So if you have someone that owns you a big favor, this might be the time to call it in. Although it's not required, it does make it much more pleasurable experience to have the bulk of driving done by a non-racer. In return, the driver gets our undying gratitude plus all their expenses paid.
Getting There: Ideally, I would like everyone to come up on Thursday night. However, I recognize that it is not always possible with work and other commitments. We will work out the logistics once get a little closer to the date. What has been done in the past is that one van goes up the night before and one goes up that morning to accommodate everyone’s needs.
Lodging: Mary has reserved a couple of suites at Rivergreen Resort in Lincoln for those that are coming up the night before. Depending on the number, it will be about $30-40.
Leg Assignments: The legs have not yet been assigned. Attached is a spreadsheet with legs for each runner. Also, there is the breakdown from last year for those that what to do a comparison. The descriptions are on the website. If you have a preference for a particular leg and/or want to be in a van with someone, please let me know. I need to assign people according to their abilities and will do my best to accommodate preferences but I can’t make any guarantees.
Theme Song: Ross has made CD’s for us for the past two relays and would like to continue the tradition. It’s a fun way for people to get know a little bit about each other (or least their musical taste). So think of your theme song and either email an MP3 file to Ross (marcusandronicus@yahoo.com) or just let him know and he’ll see if he can dig it up for you. WARNING: If you do not submit a song, one will be selected for you…Spice Girls, anyone?
Decorations/Flare: We need to have some creative thoughts on decorating our van with the “Colbert Nation” theme. Think eagles, truthiness, etc. Any ideas would be appreciated.
That’s it for now. I’ll send more details about logistics, what to bring, etc. as we get a little closer. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
